I rewatched Lord of the Rings the other day and you know what I really appreciate?

The men are so tender.

They cry, and kiss each other’s foreheads, and hug, and call each other ‘my friend’ and ‘my dear’; they’re respectful to women and faithful to their partners; they have banter without being creepy and sleazy, and literally none of that stops them from being considered “manly”.

More Lord of the Rings men please.

YES. And also I think about this alot with respect to fantasy fandom for men. Sometimes the escape isn’t just to a world of magic and lore and creatures but also to a universe where men can express affection for other men in a safe way that doesn’t endanger their idea of straightness. ‘Straight’ men have been creating science fiction and giving themselves a safe space to explore their desires for more complete relationships with other men that they withhold themselves IRL… and that they likely last experineced in childhood before adult men and society stripped them of it.

I think it also explains why they often reject females entering this universe in any way other than “mother/goddess” figures or romantic/sexual objects.

I have been a fan of Tolkien for this reason since I first picked up the hobbit in the 5th grade and devoured his universe and published works into my adulthood. IMO he wrote characters with that in mind and maintained a sort of utopian sensibility for how relationships should be portrayed without being perverted by misogynist tropes. He outright address the issue canonically in the destruction of the Witch King at the hands of Eowyn and Merry. His characters therefore have a sort of purity that enables them to grapple with other issues in an elevated way that helps the reader identify the real antogonits of his world- the curruptive vices of Morgoth long ago released in the great symphony.

Aragorn for example- is unburdened of the toxic patriarchical mores that are the downfall of Boromir - who is arguably the literary analog of men contemporary to Tolkien at the time he was writing his fiction. Faramir I think offers the reader the redemption they need for resolving those same mores- and Tolkien totally intentionally devices this arch because he- Tolkien- would be beside himself if he could not offer his reader Hope- hope is one of his most powerful themes.

I LOVE LOTR and I hope more people read Tolkien. His works are an education in morality dressed in fantasy, dismanteling toxic masculinity, underlining manhood, womanhood, and personhood as elemental states not as superficial mechanics of identity.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Why would anyone pick a human race in a fantasy game

I want a fantasy game where human isn’t even an option

Nah man, humans are the coolest

It’s one thing to fight demons if you’re from a species that lives for hundreds of years, is tied to natural magic, and births the best archers on the planet. It’s another thing entirely to do the same when your species is known to be slightly-above-average at farming.

I think I’m just gonna go back to my “sports are mostly for assholes” teenage nerd attitude after literally thousands of sports fans just destroyed part of a major city because they liked how That Ball Get Kick Good. Not even gonna get into the fact that police broke out more violent tactics against completely peaceful protests (except I just did) or the president’s recent words tying sports into patriotism and even military loyalty (JESUS) or the billions of dollars that get sunk into Ball Get Kicked instead of science or medicine or people in need.

The “industry” surrounding sports needs to die. Sports should be something kids and friends do to relax not a miniature intranational war.

why does this have 2000 notes on it all the sudden? I’m not even going to look at them. I don’t care about footly balls discourse.

I already got messages like “there are bad people in every fandom” but I really don’t recall huge crowds of people breaking windows and setting cars on fire because a new Harry’s Potter came out.
